From Portland Afoot
TriMet ridership has grown in the last decade with the agency's continued investment in MAX light rail service. Bus ridership, however, has not increased amid the slowdown in TriMet's bus purchase schedule and the agency's flat bus service levels.
Transit commuting has kept up with, but not exceeded, population growth. Across the city, transit commuting has barely changed as a share of total commute trips since 1997.
 Trends in 2010
Thanks to the 2009 opening of the Green Line, overall transit ridership held steady for much of 2010 despite the slow economy and repeated service cuts. Bus ridership, however, was falling by 5 to 8 percent through September.
