TriMet's Westside MAX extension, the second expansion of Portland's light rail system, extended the Blue Line beneath the West Hills to Beaverton and Hillsboro.

The project greatly increased TriMet ridership over the decade to come. According to the TriMet publication "Livable Portland," ridership on the line reached 2005 projections by early 2000.

A major accomplishment of the project was the Washington Park MAX station, at the time the deepest underground transit station in North America and the second-deepest in the world.

[edit] Funding

The line's $963 million cost was funded in part by new property taxes, created when voters approved a $125 million TriMet ballot measure in 1990. Federal grants covered another $403 million, or 73 percent of the cost.
