Traffic deaths in Portland have been steadily declining per capita since 2003, according to figures in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Traffic Safety Facts annual reports.

Portland's traffic fatalities per 100,000 urban population were:

  • 1999: 7.15, ranking ninth
  • 2000: 5.1, ranking fifth
  • 2002: 7.6, ranking 13th
  • 2003: 8.73, ranking 18th
  • 2004: 7.12, ranking 11th
  • 2005: 6.56, ranking ninth
  • 2006: 5.77, ranking sixth
  • 2007: 6.54, ranking sixth
  • 2008: 3.41, ranking first

The nation's safest traffic city, as a share of population, is usually New York City. But in 2008, Portland ranked internationally as slightly safer than Copenhagen, but more dangerous than Stockholm, the world leader, which saw 1.25 traffic deaths per 100,000.
