Tom McCall
From Portland Afoot
Tom McCall was a liberal Republican governor of Oregon in the 1970s whose policies are often credited with shaping Portland's ongoing transition from a fading industrial hub to a city famous for its appeal to the low-car, the creative and the independent-minded.
Among other important changes, he led Oregon to adopt the nation's first urban growth boundary law. His pro-density politics dovetailed with those of Portland's young Mayor Neil Goldschmidt.
McCall once fired the entire TriMet board.
Tom McCall Waterfront Park, made possible by his efforts to remove Harbor Drive, is named for him.
