Sunday Parkways
From Portland Afoot
Sunday Parkways are a Portland tradition, modeled on the Latin American Ciclovía concept, that temporarily closes city streets for bicycling, walking, skating and general fun. As of 2011, the city offers five of them annually, typically on the final Sunday of each month between May and September.
The event's main sponsor is the Portland Bureau of Transportation's Smart Trips program, with volunteers coordinated by Good Sport Promotion.
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance's 2011 strategic plan calls for Sunday Parkways to grow to 8 annual events by 2013, 10 consecutive Sundays by 2016 and every Sunday from May to October, with 150,000 total participants, by 2030.
