From Portland Afoot

The Portland City Council is a five-person body, elected at large to four-year terms, that runs the City of Portland. The council, whose members are known as commissioners, is chaired by the mayor of Portland, who like other council members is elected directly in an at-large mayoral election. Terms are staggered, with the mayor and council positions 1 and 4 being elected in U.S. presidential election years (those that are evenly divisible by 4) and positions 2 and 3 being elected in other even-numbered years.

The current city council includes:

• Mayor Sam Adams, to be succeeded in 2013 by the winner of the 2012 Portland mayoral election
• Commissioner Amanda Fritz, holding council position 1
• Commissioner Nick Fish, holding council position 2
• Commissioner Dan Salzman, holding council position 3
• Commissioner Randy Leonard, holding council position 4, to be succeeded in 2013 by Steve Novick

The jobs are full-time.
