Park-and-ride

From Portland Afoot

Jump to: navigation, search

A park-and-ride is a parking lot near a transit stop -- in the TriMet service area, usually a MAX stop.

Park-and-rides operated by TriMet are, like most parking lots outside downtown Portland, free to use, though vehicles aren't supposed to be parked there at night.

Several park-and-rides also include bike-and-ride stations.

[edit] Proposal to charge for parking at park-and-rides

Charging for auto parking at park-and-rides was among the ideas proposed by the agency during the 2012 TriMet budget cut process. The agency estimated it would net $100,000 a year from charging for parking at its busiest lots, including staff and infrastructure costs.

In a rough calculation in October 2011, Portland Afoot figured that if the agency could make $1 a day from parking fees on each of the 3,090 spaces at park-and-rides that were then full on weekdays, it would gross about $900,000 annually.
