Low-car
From Portland Afoot
Low-car is the phrase we like to use at Portland Afoot to describe the more than 53,000 Portland households that include more adults than autos.
The figure, based on three-year Census Bureau estimates from 2005 to 2008, is actually an underestimate. It doesn't include households whose members aren't in the labor force, or households outside the city limits. It includes tens of thousands of TriMet riders and tens of thousands of bikers. It has about 17,000 who work from home, too: Portland is one of the nation's telecommuting capitals.
Many good organizations exist to explain the virtues of low-car and car-free life to people who drive cars everywhere. Portland Afoot exists to help improve low-car life for those of us who are already living it.
