Los Angeles is the largest city on the West Coast. Dorothy Parker, who lived in New York City, once called L.A. "72 suburbs in search of a city," and people who live in the Portland area regularly use it as an example of the kind of city they do not want to live in.

It's the largest U.S. metro area that has fewer public transit trips per capita than Portland.

Los Angeles is the southern terminus of Amtrak's Coast Starlight.
