Interstate 5 is, with Interstate 84, one of the two major trans-national highways that meet in Portland.

In the four-county Portland metro area, I-5 runs from Woodland, Washington to just south of Wilsonville, Oregon. Interstate 205 loops eastward from Salmon Creek, Wash., and rejoins I-5 on the south side of Tualatin. Interstate 405 loops westward from north Portland around downtown Portland and rejoins I-5 just north of the South Waterfront.

I-5 crosses the Willamette River on the Marquam Bridge.

The highway also leads to Vancouver BC, Seattle, Wilsonville, Salem, Albany, Eugene, Roseburg, Grants Pass, Medford, Ashland and California, including Davis, Los Angeles, San Diego and Tijuana.
