Interstate 205

From Portland Afoot

Jump to: navigation, search

Interstate 205 is the large highway ring that loops off Interstate 5 east around most of Vancouver and Portland, providing a detour for freight traffic and other long-distance travelers. It crosses the Columbia River with the Glenn Jackson Bridge. Thanks to the activism of a short-lived, largely Clark County-based bicycle advocacy group, the Glenn Jackson Bridge has a multi-use path down its center.

South of Gateway Transit Center, the Green Line runs largely on land that was set aside for mass transit when I-205 was constructed.

The completion of Interstate 205 was largely responsible for the explosive growth of East Vancouver in the 1980s and 1990s.
