Burnside Street
From PortlandAfoot
Burnside Street is one of Portland's main thoroughfares, stretching for more than 400 blocks from the west side of the West Hills to Gresham. It serves as the north-south divider among Portland's six quadrants.
As of September 2010, it is being rebuilt into the eastbound half of a couplet with Couch Street between Northeast 3rd Avenue and Northeast 14th Avenue. Burnside will carry three eastbound lanes, and Couch two westbound lanes.
In central Portland, the street has been the subject of years of debate over how to reduce its role as a gash through the downtown neighborhoods.
