Buckman
From PortlandAfoot
The Buckman neighborhood, in inner southeast Portland, is one of the traditional hearts of bicycle culture in the city and one of the city's most popular neighborhoods to live without a car.
According to Census surveys from 2005 to 2009, 40 percent of workers were car-free in the southwest corner of the neighborhood, between Stark, Hawthorne, the Willamette River and 16th Avenue. Other parts of the neighborhood had somewhat higher car ownership.
The neighborhood is named for Cyrus Buckman, an orchardist and school board and city council member from the late 1800s.
