Burlington Northern Santa Fe
From Portland Afoot
Burlington Northern Santa Fe is a national railroad company owned, as of 2010, by Berkshire Hathaway. It owns and operates on many of the railroad tracks in the Portland area, including:
- the tracks on the north side of the Columbia Gorge through Clark County and Skamania County
- the railroad bridge just downstream of the Interstate Bridge
- the Amtrak route north to Seattle
- much of the old Oregon Electric line -- the one going through Wilsonville (on which WES runs), Donald, west of Woodburn, Keizer, along the Salem waterfront
BNSF also owns the "Oregon Trunk" line, which runs through much of central Oregon. This line connects with the BN tracks in Washington east of The Dalles, crosses the Columbia River (and interchanges with the UP line on the Oregon side), then roughly parallel to U.S. Highway 97 through Madras, Redmond and Bend, joining the UPRR mainline near Chemult.
