Our September commuting podcast: Seats in the street, mayors behind the wheel
Portland Afoot doesn’t like to tell people how they should or shouldn’t get around.
But for mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith, we’ll consider an exception. From the looks of his driving record, this guy should probably be minimizing his time behind a wheel.
And here’s the question I asked co-host Lillian Karabaic in Portland Afoot’s monthly commuting podcast: Should we change the law to make it easier to permanently take people with terrible driving records off the road?
Also on our docket:
- The City of Portland is experimenting with replacing more street auto parking spaces with café seating. So we asked the businesses on SW Ankeny Alley whether eliminating parking to create a pedestrian-only street has been good for sales.
- Should you or should you not participate in Portland’s annual Bicycle Commute Challenge this September? (Hint: participants receive free pizza and beer.)
And as usual we’ve got a low-car transportation tip of the month, Lily’s favorite online chatter about TriMet and my funny story from the bus. Plus: Lily Allen (no relation) offers an almost uncannily appropriate theme song for this month’s topics.
