Busload of faith: Public transit as ritual

Blog posts sponsored by Drive Less Connect, ODOT’s sweet new ridesharing service.

insidePortland novelist Scott Tienken, who readers may remember from August’s Art Issue, has a short, characteristically metaphorical piece on TriMet Diaries this week about our odd urban religion of public transportation. It’s his first in a regular column for the site.

My favorite line, I think, is his pithy description of a bus driver: "head priest and transportation sublord."

I know, right?

Happy holidays, Portland. If you’re searching for that last-minute present (and you’ve already considered a $5 gift subscription to our 10-minute newsmagazine, natch) the e-book version of Mass Transportation, the novel Tienken set almost entirely on the #75 bus is available for just $1.99. Check it out.
